Why a New York company filing isn't an opening

What a new company filing tells you, what it doesn't, and how we keep filings out of our counts.

A filing is paperwork

Forming an LLC or corporation costs little and takes minutes. Plenty of companies never open a door, and the address is often a registered agent or a home.

How we use them

New York Department of State filings with a storefront-style name are listed in their own section. We keep only names that read like a storefront, drop addresses shared by four or more filings (agents), and never add them to our counts.

Why bother

If you sell to new businesses, a filing can be the very first trace of one. Just treat it as a lead to check, not a fact.

Sources: New York State Liquor Authority applications and New York City health inspections. Written from the public records themselves; check with the agency for anything legal or binding.
